Your First Chiropractic Visit

Dispelling rumors about chiropractic treatment

This article is meant to dispel rumors about the chiropractic treatment, and help you understand what a chiropractic treatment is, and what it’s meant to do.

Dr. Day was apprehensive and wary of chiropractors for years. He dealt with chronic health problems and finally agreed to see a chiropractor on a recommendation of years prior.  It was the first relief of neck pain, migraines, and chronic fatigue he had ever felt.  His deep passion is to shift the paradigm of the public on the benefits of chiropractic and natural medicine as a PRIMARY choice for public health.

Many are wary to visit a chiropractor because they aren’t sure what will happen on the first visit and they are very apprehensive.

The most common thing I hear after a patient’s first visit is they wish they would have not put off the visit out of apprehension or fear.  All of the paradigms and beliefs they had about natural healthcare or chiropractic were dispelled upon getting a detailed exam.

A gentle walkthrough of your first chiropractic visit and treatment

1.) Call the office, check your benefits:

Our friendly staff can answer any questions you may have.  They have heard it all.  They can check your insurance benefits free of charge and let you know what amount you will be responsible for in your chiropractic care.  They will also let you know if you have any adjunctive benefits for massage and acupuncture.

2.)  Your first visit exam:

Your body’s movements are governed by the nervous system.  When a nerve fires a message, a muscle moves into action. The Muscles and joints of your body work together in synergy to give you the ability to move in all directions.

Where movement is lost, or dysfunctional, the body will have to compensate in some way.  Loss of movement can derive from joints of the body that lose their motion, from scar tissue, or muscle spasm. Many other causes exist but are too detailed for this article.

chiropractic-first-visitYour chiropractor will

  • Check your posture
  • Check your joint motions in all directions
  • Check you muscle strength
  • Check for presence of scar tissue or trigger points in the muscle
  • Check for movement coordination

From your presentation the doctor will be able to derive the cause or causes of your pain or dysfunction.

3.) Explanation of your condition and Treatment Plan:

At Day Wellness we spend the time to help you understand:

  • What the problem is
  • How serious it is
  • If you need care from another doctor (specialist, general practitioner MD etc.)
  • How long it will take get to full resolution of your problem

We will continue to guide you through your healing process, explaining and teaching along the way.  Our goal is to get you into balanced movement which allows you to live a more vital life, not just escape pain.

4.)  No pressure:

You will not get trapped into any extensive treatment plans. We want patients to know what our professional opinion is for their health, but ultimately it’s up to you to decide what level of care you are comfortable with.

5.) The Treatment:

So many preconceived notions revolve around the chiropractic treatment.  “They will crack your back, and send you on your way.”  “It’s dangerous.”  These are common fears patients voice to us.

Chiropractic has been found to be extremely safe in the research.  Chiropractors have some of the lowest liability insurance costs for primary care doctors of any field because the most common reaction to treatment is soreness.

Concerns have been dispelled by the most prestigious research journal “Spine” and other well known journals. 1,2,3. Much resistance and warnings by family and other medical practitioners are from old paradigms not associated with modern research.

Chiropractic is utilized by almost every professional sports team in the country.  Athletes wouldn’t go without a treatment, but the public is easily swayed by popular opinion. See the Wilk vs AMA supreme court case reference below for a great example.

Adjusting Spinal Misalignment

Chiropractors do have the primary focused ability of improving spinal alignment more than any other skill.  Remember earlier in the article where we discussed the nervous system controlling all movement? The spinal joint is dense with nerve fibers.  The spinal joints of your body function as levers and a stable point for the muscles of your body as well as the column in which the spinal cord is protected.

When the spine loses normal motion, some level of nerve confusion or nerve amnesia can happen. The dense bundles of nerves in the joint can lose their normal function and begin to transmit pain or alter muscle activity.  After immobility, pain signals begin to signal and confuse the spinal cord while balanced movement signals diminish. Long term immobility can lead to muscle spasm, muscles being turned off, loss of dynamic motion in hobbies and sports and long term can lead to arthritis and degeneration of the joint.

Facets of Chiropractic Subluxation or Facilitated Segment

Loss of joint motionIs a highly specific delivery of a vectored force in order to re-introduce movement into a joint complex that has lost native movement pattern. When force is directed in the direction a joint should go, the nerve bundles in the joint capsule are “rebooted” temporarily to their normal function.  A shift in the nervous system takes place and the patients natural movement system returns.  Over a period of adjustments, the native movement pattern is re-learned by the brain.  Pain disappears, and dynamic motion returns.

Many patients I treat report exercise becoming easier, yoga poses opening up, swim stroke rotation freeing up, marathon times dropping.

What we treat

We treat loss of function and pain head to toe.  There are soft tissue or joint manipulation techniques for all areas of the body.  The public is often unaware how much chiropractic can improve extremity injuries, energy levels, brain clarity, and even mood.

At DayWellness we offer a Progressive Chiropractic Experience and not only are excellent practitioners of hands on treatment. We also expand into nutritional work, acupuncture, and soft tissue balancing.  It is the next level in care and you will not be disappointed.
