How Do I Know If I Need Sciatica Treatment?

Find out what sciatica is, what it presents like, and the logical sciatica treatment options to fix the problem.

sciaticWhat is the sciatic nerve?
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. Five pairs of nerves of the low back join together to make up this beautiful nerve that travels all the way down to the foot and toes.

What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a term describing irritation to this nerve. Usually, symptoms range from pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates or travels down the lower back into the buttocks and down the backsides of the thighs and legs. Occasionally, the pain can go all the way down the foot into the toes. The pain is usually very severe and makes daily activities very hard to perform.

What causes sciatica?
When the low back is misaligned or out of place, the pressure in the discs in between each vertebra is increased. As you can see from the picture, this results in compression and irritation to the nerves that exit those spinal levels (shown in red). When the nerves are pinched and irritated, pain and loss of function results.

spineCan Chiropractic help?
Not only can chiropractic help, it is the only logical way of fixing this condition. I purposely say “fix” because just covering up the pain with a drug doesn’t do anything to the problem. In our office, we are interested in fixing the problem at the source and actually increasing the health of our patients.

Chiropractic care works by correcting the misaligned vertebrae, removing the pressure on the nerves. When the alignment is fixed and restored, pain is reduced, and flexibility, strength, and function is improved.

Typical case study
Many patients come into my office with sciatica. When new patients first come in, we do an in-depth examination to figure out the extent of the problem. This includes a series of functional core strength and flexibility exercises, range of motion, any necessary xrays and orthopedic tests, palpation of the spine, and a postural examination. With this information, along with the new patient intake, we develop a wellness score report card for the patient, as well as an in depth postural exam. This helps the patient know all about their condition, including the origin of the problem, and how we can restore health and vitality.

Correction of the problem involves a series of specific adjustments and prescribed exercises to keep our body stable and strong. Isn’t it time you tried chiropractic care for you and your family? If you are experiencing any of the common symptoms of sciatica, please call our office now to schedule an appointment.
